With Valentine’s Day around the corner it is only fitting to chat about one of the latest aesthetic trends. Lip augmentation with fillers is a non surgical treatment with minimal down time. It is a very common treatment that many of my patients ask for. Maybe this is because of certain celebrities sporting their new lippies or all the new nude lip kits out there (btw, LOVE!) Regardless – fuller lips were fab in 2016, and now lip fillers and perfect pouts are here to stay for another year. Talk about new year, new 2.0!
What are the different types of lip fillers? What’s in that syringe anyway? How do I know which is best for me?
These are GREAT questions. Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC are made by Allergan. Which one do I use more regularly? Answer: Juvederm Ultra XC. This is a great choice for those who are looking for #fullerlips. That #perfectpout is achieved because this lip filler adds more volume that we may have lost. It is also a great choice for those who may have a small upper lip to begin with. Juvederm Volbella XC is the newest lip filler in the Allergan family. A perfect choice for those who have #lipsticklines – those lines around your lips that make your lipstick smudge and run. Volbella is a great choice for someone who wants to improve or define their vermillion border. It will make people wonder why your lips look so perfect and natural!
There are several companies who manufacture fillers (in this post I only discussed two to keep it short and sweet!) They are commonly described as hyaluronic acid fillers. Believe it or not hy-a-lur-on-ic acid is naturally found in our skin. HA promotes hydration and is found to be very moisturizing. As we age we lose volume in our lips, cheeks, lower face, etc. By using hyaluronic acid fillers we are able to restore that volume loss and stop the aging process.
During a consultation I ask my patient WHAT they are looking to achieve. Together we will come up with the perfect treatment plan and find which filler is best for YOU. Many times one syringe is enough to create those luscious lips, but it also depends on the deficit. The best way to know is by scheduling a consultation with myself or an experienced injector in your area.
What about down time? What should I expect to happen after treatment?
Naturally whenever you are treating an area with a needle there are risks of bruising, swelling and redness post procedure. They can last as little as 24 hours or can last as long as 5 days. Every patient’s experience is different, but for the most part you are able to go back to work the next day. A few great tips to decrease your chances of bruising and swelling? Stop any NSAID or aspirin at least 5 days prior to your procedure, start arnica pills twice a day at least 7 days prior to your procedure, and eat half of a fresh pineapple! Pineapple contains bromelain which is said to help decrease bruising. See — you learn something new every day!
